After serving more than 30 years in the State Assembly, Ivan Lafayette will begin a new chapter in his public life, serving as Deputy Superintendent for Community Affairs for New York State’s Insurance Department - a position Governor David Paterson tapped him for earlier this year.
“Ivan Lafayette is an outstanding addition to the Department and a great choice to lead our outreach effort,” said Superintendent of Insurance Eric R. Dinallo. “His appointment reflects Governor Paterson’s strong commitment to consumer advocacy and policyholder protection.”
The position, which will pay Lafayette $140,000 per year, will include planning and directing the Department’s outreach and community affairs initiatives, services and programs on a variety of issues including working closely with the senior population throughout the state. He will also collaborate with other state agencies and community groups to gather and analyze information to support or improve community-based programs.
During his last three decades in the Assembly, Lafayette was a member of the Insurance Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on Automobile Insurance, and one of his biggest accomplishments was the passage of an Uninsured Motorist’s Law that established penalties for driving without insurance.
Lafayette also held various leadership positions in the Assembly including serving as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and built many relationships within the community.
“His understanding of both the insurance industry and the issues affecting the diverse communities across this great state makes him superbly suited to the task of educating New Yorkers about the importance and wise use of insurance,” Dinallo said.
Lafayette resigned from his Assembly position this past summer, and Democrats have tapped Michael Den Dekker to replace Lafayette in the Assembly.
