ASTORIA — Quick thinking by neighbors of an Astoria building helped save the life of a woman escaping a two-alarm fire Sunday, eyewitnesses said. The blaze took place around 2 p.m. at 30-36 41st Ave., firefighters said.
A tenant, who the New York Post identified as Irene Karras, was able to escape when she jumped from a third story window into a makeshift cushion made by neighbors, according to eyewitnesses. The cushion was fashioned together by a mattress and blanket, the paper reported.
No one else was hurt in the fire, firefighters said.
