Democrats sweep State Assembly races

Democrats swept the State Assembly races on November 4, with Grace Meng securing 86 percent of the vote over Ellen Young in District 22, which encompasses Flushing.
“We’re all very excited and even more excited about our future president,” said Meng minutes after her victory. “This is not a victory for myself, but a victory for the entire community.”
She continued, “Flushing is a very diverse community and we couldn’t have done it without the people.”
Eager to start her work for January 1, 2009, Meng, a young mother, told The Courier that she had a meeting with a city agency at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5.
In District 26, Ann Margaret Carrozza, who chairs the Election Law, Aging, Banks, Governmental Employees and Insurance Committees, won 67 percent over newcomer Robert Speranza’s 33 percent.
In south Queens, it was incumbent Audrey Pheffer over Gerald Sullivan, 67 to 33 percent in District 23.
“I felt that I would be re-elected,” she said. “I feel that I served my constituents.”
Pheffer, who has served since 1987 after winning a special election, said the challenge for her latest term will be the economic crisis.
“I’m committed to keeping the budget so we don’t have to raise taxes and don’t do damage to services that would impact quality of life.”
And Andrew Hevesi, son of disgraced State Comptroller Alan Hevesi, won 74 percent of the vote in District 28.
Margaret Markey, the Democrat, easily beat Anthony Nunziato with 68 percent of the vote.
“I am deeply grateful for this vote of confidence from the people of the 30th Assembly District,” said Markey. “New York faces many challenges over the months to come, beginning with the special session of the Legislature that will take place later this month. As we move ahead, job preservation and development and the continuation of important community programs for families, seniors and youth will be my highest priorities.”
