State Senator Frank Padavan (left) donned his Boy Scout Troop 1 shirt and attended their Honor Court recently at Temple Beth Sholom in Flushing.
The Troop, which has been meeting in Flushing since February 1910 (the year the Boy Scouts of America was instituted) is the oldest in the Greater New York area and arguably the country, according to leaders.
They gathered at the Temple, at 172nd Street and Northern Boulevard, on Saturday, February 7 to raise two of their members to scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.
The young men joined Padavan on stage with their proud parents and scoutmaster to receive the New York State Senate Medal of Achievement and a Certificate of Merit in recognition of their accomplishments.
Shown here are (from left) Senator Padavan; James Shannon; Eagle Scout James Shannon Jr.; Nancy Shannon; Scoutmaster Jack Baer; Wendy Lam; Eagle Scout Ken Chan and Sin Chiu Chan.
Padavan wears the uniform with pride. He’s only the second person to be made an honorary member of Troop 1. The other is Yankee slugger and baseball legend Babe Ruth.
