Vallone hosts hoops tourney for kids

Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. is teaming up with the Police Service Area (PSA) #9 and its Community Council, to host the third annual Peter F. Vallone Jr. Winter Recess Basketball Tournament on February 17 and 18.
Vallone, who raised $500 in funding to support the tournament, encourages neighborhood youths to come, play and meet the police officers that patrol their neighborhoods.
“Sports and friendly competition are great ways to create bonds between local police and the youth they protect,” Vallone said.
Participants must be boys between the ages 11-13 who reside in Astoria, Ravenswood, Queensbridge or the Woodside Houses. The tournament take place at the Variety Boys and Girls Club located at 21-12 30th Road.
There will be four teams consisting of eight players each, and interested youngsters should sign up soon because space is limited. The practice date will be February 16, and all games start at 6 p.m. sharp.
To sign up, contact PSA #9, officer Elcock at 718-969-9454. Please leave your full name and contact information.
Last year’s tournament drew large crowds to the gymnasium, and Vallone hopes this year’s tournament will have even bigger turnouts. On the last day of the tournament, Vallone will award trophies to the winning teams in a ceremony with police and community officials.
“There’s a lot of talent and heart in these communities, and I can’t wait to see them put it on display out on the hardwood,” Vallone said.
