State Sen. Frank Padavan (R−Bellerose) said that his district office is collecting used cell phones that will either be recycled or donated to victims of domestic violence.
The senator said his office, at 89−39 Gettysburg St. in Bellerose, will accept cell phone, batteries and chargers through April 29. The recycling effort is centered around Earth Day, which will be honored nationwide April 22.
“With many New Yorkers undertaking their annual spring cleanings, many are coming across an old cell phone or charger no longer in use,” he said. “Far too often, these used phones are eventually discarded in the trash and pose a hazard to the environment.”
All donated phones and accessories will be given to Verizon Wireless’ recycling program. The phones will be refurbished, recycled or sold. Proceeds will be donated to domestic violence advocacy groups or used to purchase wireless phones or services for domestic violence victims.
