The city closed two schools in Bayside and Flushing Thursday and instructed four more in Flushing, Corona, Bayside and Maspeth to close Friday after a high number of students exhibited flu-like symptoms, city officials said Thursday.
City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said Bayside’s PS 130 and Flushing’s PS 242 will be closed for as many as five days starting Thursday after students complained of feeling ill earlier in the week.
On Thursday evening, Frieden and Klein issued a list of six schools in the city that would be closed for up to five days starting Friday. Four were in Queens: Flushing's PS/IS 499, the Queens College School for Math, Science & Technology, where 17 students had flu-like symptoms; Corona's PS 143, the Louis Armstrong School, where 38 students were reported ill; Bayside's PS 203, the Oakland Gardens School, where 9 students are sick; and Maspeth's PS 73, Frank Sansivieri Intermediate School, where 31 illnesses were documented among students.
