Quantcast

A great modern Asian meal

I can never have enough of one of my favorite Chinese/fusion restaurants in Flushing – Mulan, on the second floor of the beautiful Queens Crossing building on Main Street.

The building houses several restaurants, from fast food Mango to the charming Rose Tea House to a Korean barbecue An Su Roo. Each one is a feast for the eyes and taste.

Mulan, with an extensive fusion menu, never ceases to amaze me. When I enter, the sight of a curtain of “rain” surrounding a large white platform with white table clothed tables surrounding the platform is a stunning sight. Then in the back are half-dozen private dining rooms for small parties.

The evening I was there, my group of ten friends sat in a private room with a huge round table offering a Lazy Susan top to share food easily.

Our meal, attentively served by Sunny and Tony, our private hosts, began with Wu-bsi – sumptuous thick short spare ribs in a tasty, finger-licking-good barbecue sauce.

Our appetizers were presented to each of us on one plate with a variety of hors d’oeuvres, including a grilled juicy scallop, vegetable samosa, a bun of pork, and a steamed shrimp dumpling.

Our main course was accompanied by a reasonably priced bottle of wine, that is also available by the glass at prices from $9-$13. There is a full bar that offers a wide variety of cocktails.

We shared several dishes for our main course, including pepper steak surrounded by broccoli florets, peanut chicken and my favorite, crispy lightly battered shrimp with walnuts.

Instead of rice, we had lightly spiced Pad Thai noodles, a great accompaniment to the other dishes.

To finish the meal we each were presented with a plate of sweet seasonal fruits of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe on top of a slice of orange. A perfect ending to a delicious meal.

Try it, you will love it. Free parking, open seven-days-a-week.
