Police were trying to figure out how a murdered Brooklyn man’s corpse ended up on the street of a quiet Springfield Gardens block early Monday morning.
Officers on patrol found the body of Dillion Veira, 32, of Blake Avenue in Brooklyn on the street near 180th Street and 144th Avenue around 1:40 a.m., police said. Veira had gunshot wounds to his neck and the back of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, according to police.
Neighbors said they did not hear any gunshots or hear any commotion during the night.
“This is shocking to all of us,” said a resident of the block who refused to give his name.
Homicide detectives searched the scene for hours Monday morning, but no suspects were named and no arrests had been made as of press time Tuesday. It was not known if Veira’s body was dropped at the corner or if he was killed at the location, according to police.
Recent NYPD crime statistics show data for crimes this year in Jamaica, Springfield Gardens and St. Albans through July 12 indicate murder has dropped 25 percent from the same period last year, with six homicides in 2009 compared to eight last year. Overall, crime has decreased roughly 21 percent, with 963 crimes reported this year compared to 1,217 during the same period in 2008.
