Two win ‘Cop of the Month’ honors in 106th

Noise complaints once again dominated the most recent 106th Precinct Community Council meeting.

After awarding “Cop of the Month” honors to Police Officers Andres Gonzalez and Nicholas Wong for making a burglary collar that closed out a pattern within the precinct, old business was discussed – including the issuance of 69 criminal court summonses since the last meeting.

As reported in The Courier Sun, at last month’s meeting, residents complained that people, especially youths, have been drinking late at night in the weeds in Gateway Park near 165th Avenue.

Officers reported that the precinct has gotten a bigger ATV vehicle, and that they will work with the Parks Department to solve the problem.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, it was reported, that at 124th/125th Streets and Sutter Avenue/Rockaway Boulevard, there were arrests for drinking and other issues.

“We are actively enforcing those streets – the noise, the drinking, smoking,” said Sergeant Peter Iemma, who also noted that the abandoned house on 125th Street and Sutter has been addressed.

In total, on July 3, 4 and 5, 32 criminal court summonses were given out and there were two arrests and 55 confiscations.

Additionally, police officers made three arrests for assault outside the Underground Bar. Cops said they have met with the establishment’s owners, who have been cooperative and are in compliance with “carding” and making sure that no underage drinking goes on.

As for the numerous noise complaints, officers said the best recourse is to call 3-1-1.

City Councilmember Eric Ulrich, who spoke at the meeting, said that he has gotten results by dialing 3-1-1.

Additionally, say police, they are limiting the number of block parties and closely monitoring those that are authorized. Music is to be shut off at 7 p.m.; the street is to reopen at 9 p.m. There is “zero tolerance” for otherwise, they said.

There will be no August meeting of the 106th Precinct Community Council, and the National Night Out Against Crime will be held on Tuesday, August 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Addabbo Park in Tudor Village.
