More than 150 North Shore Towers residents played golf, cards and lunched to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS) at the annual Babe Zaharias Golf Tournament, Card Party and Luncheon.
The Towers Ladies Golf Association (TLGA) held the yearly event to raise money for breast and prostate cancer research and for ACS’s Camp Adventure on Long Island for cancer-stricken children and their siblings.
“I thought it was wonderful; it was all for a good cause,” said Ina Rudolph, president of TLGA. “We probably raised more money than we have ever raised before.”
Prior to the luncheon, lady and male golfers took to the green in a 20-team tournament, while others played at a card party.
A new way to raise money this year was the Tree of Life. For a fee, participants could put a grandchild’s name on a leaf of the Tree of Life and organizers said it was very successful.
Other ways residents can contribute year-round is through contribution envelopes that can be made out in honor of a loved one.
“We’ve been doing this event for over 20 years and each year it has grown. We’re a very enthusiastic crew,” said event chair Harriet Lane.
The winners of the golf tournament all received prizes and, although the event was overbooked, participants were glad to come together for a good cause.
“It was wonderful. Not only was the weather great but the camaraderie was so good,” said Eneas Arkawy.
Rita Coelho read a poem “from my heart,” that cheered on the efforts of the organizers and participants to eradicate cancer. “All I can say, is the money you spent may find the answer, and someday eliminate cancer,” she read.
“The participation, the amount of people who participated in this event was beyond our expectations,” event co-chair Bernice Mittman said. “There are few people who have not been touched by this disease and we’re doing whatever we could to help research and help find a cure.”
