Floral Park Marine killed in Afghanistan

A Floral Park Marine, only 26 years old, perished in Afghanistan – his third tour of duty – on Monday, August 17, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Lance Corporal Leopold F. Damas died as a result of a hostile incident while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Damas was a rifleman assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. He joined the Marine Corps in January 2006 and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on March 1, 2007.

He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2007 to September 2007 and July 2008 to February 2009, and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in May 2009. His awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and various other personal and unit decorations.
