No chance for pit bull after ‘dogfight’

They nicknamed him “Chance,” but he never got a second one.
On Tuesday, August 18, at about 6 a.m., Diana Rossi said she was going to the bagel shop when she noticed something in front of the Animal Hospital – the Rockaways, on Beach Channel Drive.
Upon closer inspection, she said, it was an animal carrier.
“I looked in and this dog was squashed in there,” she told The Courier. “He looked like he was unconscious, then he opened his eyes, moved his head and I saw a massive head wound.”
When the staff of the animal hospital arrived, she said, they took the badly-injured dog inside.
The pit bull had his “ear partially ripped off and bite wounds all over his body,” according to Dr. Jay Rogoff, who treated the dog and performed “major surgery.”
“I just went ahead and did everything out of humanitarian reasons,” he said.
It looked like the animal had been involved in a dogfight, he said.
“This dog was bad . . . for people to do something like that is unbelievable,” said Rogoff, who noted that this case was the most severe his seen.
Unfortunately, despite the staff’s best efforts, “Chance” passed away on Sunday, August 23.
“His wounds were too extensive, it’s a pity,” said Rogoff. “He seemed like a very sweet dog.”
Now Rossi and her sister are trying to raise money to offset the costs of treatment.
So far, they have collected about $1,000.
“People from California were calling to make a donation,” said Rossi. “It touched people from all over.”
“I’ve never seen this before,” she continued, “but I’ve heard there’s dog fighting in the area.”
