Mother Anna Jerry has lived through the Great Depression, two World Wars, and most recently, the advent of the Internet, with Twitter, MySpace and more.
And to celebrate her 100th birthday, at Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church in St. Albans, Assemblymember William Scarborough presented her with a proclamation.
Born on August 3, 1909 in Aiken County, South Carolina to Lawrence Childs and Mary Jane Gardener Childs, Jerry was 21 years old when she came to New York in 1930, where she met and married Theodore Jerry. They raised four children in Jamaica. She has nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She still lives independently in an apartment.
Jerry has been a devout church member of Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church for the past 70 years. She has served on the Usher Board, Missionaries, the Choir and the Senior Choir, and did outreach as a Willing Worker.
She loves to garden and has won prizes from the Housing Authority for her flower gardens. She still likes to crochet and bake cakes and pies. Though she never learned to drive, she still manages to get around without a car.
