Finishing Touch

One thing incumbent on those who hold the highest rank, of Eagle, in the Boy Scouts is the “Leadership Project.” For Bayside Eagle Scout Nicholas Monterosso, the project was to repair the wrought iron fence at the Lawrence Cemetery.

The plot of land was part of the original land patent granted to John Lawrence by the Dutch in 1645. It is the resting place for several historical figures, including a former NYC mayor and a one-time president of the NY Stock Exchange, among others.

In August of 1967, the little known, tree-shaded slope was declared a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission; it is overseen by the Bayside Historical Society, who cooperated with the ambitious project leader.

Monterosso (shown here putting on some finishing touches,) organized his team of volunteers, gathered materials and conducted his project on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20, at the cemetery located at 216th Street and 42nd Avenue in Bayside.
