Six people were injured Wednesday after a 17-year-old driver lost control of his car and crashed into a bus shelter at 65th Avenue and Douglaston Parkway, police said.
Five people waiting in the shelter at Douglaston’s Q30 bus stop were taken to Queens hospitals in ambulances after rainy conditions caused the driver to crash into the shelter on Oct. 7 just before 8 a.m., police said. The driver was also injured in the crash.
Police said five of the victims were treated for minor injuries, while a fifth was in more serious condition.
The driver was attempting to pass another vehicle as he drove southbound along the Douglaston Parkway when his 1998 Nissan Sentra skidded on the wet roadway and crashed into the shelter, shattering all of its glass, police said. But he was not arrested at the scene and will not likely face any charges after police deemed the crash an accident.
The road was closed in both directions while emergency responders removed the victims. The shelter remained open for commuters throughout the week, but its glass has not yet been replaced.
