Car thief in Bayside caught red-handed: DA

BAYSIDE — A Flushing man was arrested last Thursday after a bystander spotted him breaking into a parked car, the Queens district attorney’s office said.

Around 2 a.m., Mark Durando, 22, was spotted on 201st Street near 32nd Avenue rummaging inside a car, according to a criminal complaint filed by the DA’s office. Police responded to the scene and allegedly found marijuana and ecstasy in his pockets, as well as a gravity knife, another man’s wallet and a GPS device, the DA’s office said.

Durando allegedly told the officer he was homeless and was holding the wallet for a friend, but the owner of the wallet and the GPS device said otherwise, the DA’s office said. Durando was arraigned on felony stolen property charges, which could carry up to four years in prison if he is convicted, the DA’s office said.
