To commemorate The Queens Courier’s 25 years of covering news in the borough, the paper will take a look back on the biggest news stories and newsmakers during the last quarter of a century in Queens.
For the next five months, the newspaper will run a special monthly section highlighting the top news stories that the paper has covered during a five-year period. All of the special sections will lead up to its special 25th Anniversary Commemorative edition on June 24.
“On founding The Couriers, my mission was to advocate for our community,” said Victoria Schneps-Yunis, the Publisher of The Queens Courier chain of newspapers, who founded the newspaper in 1985. “I call myself the Queensophile because I am so proud of the uniqueness of our borough. Our mission continues to be the same to this day 25 years later.”
To kick off its historic anniversary coverage, The Queens Courier will run a special section in the Thursday, January 28 edition looking back on the newspaper’s first five years of coverage of the borough beginning with its inaugural edition in 1985 through 1989. The section will encompass a mix of articles as they were originally published in the newspaper as well as a look back at some other top news events that took place in the borough during those five years.
Expect to relive the glory of the 1986 Mets World Series victory, the fall of Donald Manes and his suicide while serving as Queens Borough President, the first years of his successor Claire Shulman’s tenure and many other local stories that captured the attention of the borough’s residents.
