On Monday, January 25, at Bell Boulevard and 73rd Avenue, police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck. After an investigation by the Highway Accident Investigation Squad, it was determined that Arnulfo Velarde, 84, of Bayside, was crossing Bell Boulevard westbound when he was struck by a 2009 Toyota sedan that was traveling northbound on Bell Boulevard. The operator of the vehicle, a 50-year-old man, remained on the scene. Velarde was taken by E.M.S. to Queens General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead There are no signs of criminality at this time, the investigation is ongoing.
