Twenty-two $ 6,000 Technology Scholarships for qualified graduating high school seniors have been awarded to Queensborough Community College (QCC), through a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for study in Electrical Engineering; Technology and Laser and Fiber Optics Technology.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity for graduating high school seniors to come to Queensborough and reap the benefits of the College’s personalized academic attention – tuition free,” said Stu Asser, QCC Class of ’67 and Professor and Chairperson of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology Department.
Full-time students in the Technology Scholarship Program will be enrolled in the Freshman Academy for Science Technology Engineering and Math – one of six Freshman Academies at Queensborough – writing intensive courses and virtual learning communities and even gaining personalized student support services.
QCC is in the top 1 percent of community colleges in the number of NSF grant awards, with six active multi-year grants totaling nearly $4.5 million. Nationwide, it is sixth in total dollars.
“Through this program, students can take advantage of the College’s partnerships with local industries that often lead to internships, and jobs,” said David Lieberman, Professor and Chairperson of the Physics Department.
Lieberman, who co-wrote the grant proposal with Asser, added that over the next 30 years, there will be a dramatic increase in the demand for skilled workers in science and technology.
Interested graduating high school seniors must apply by Monday, March 1. For more information, call the QCC admissions department at 718-631-6236.
