The students and faculty of Immaculate Conception School in Jamaica Estates have a long history of supporting charitable causes and when the deadliest earthquake in centuries ravaged Haiti, they were moved.
One of the school’s fundraising traditions is “Dress-down Days,” where the students pay a fee so they can wear the kind of clothes kids of that age like – rather than having to live up to the school’s dress code.
Given the enormity of need, the students and faculty enlarged the concept. This year, they had a daily-themed Dress-down Week. Beginning on Monday, February 1, students kicked-in a dollar a day.
Monday was “Haiti Day,” at the school, located at 179-14 Dalny Road. Everyone wore red or blue, the colors of the country’s flag. “Twin/Triplet/Quadruplet Day,” had students teamed up in matching attire. On “Jersey Day,” kids donned sports gear for their favorite team. “Mismatch Day,” saw students in oddball combinations or shoes, sneakers, socks or even earrings.
The fundraising week concluded on Friday, February 5 with the old-standby dress-down day.
“Haitian Ribbons,” in the red-and-blue national colors, adorned with hearts, were made by eighth-graders and hundreds sold for $1. The kids put out a collection bin by the school office for spare change and also collected “tons
