Expelled State Senator Hiram Monserrate refused to step down when he was fighting the felony assault charges against him for slashing his girlfriend Karla Giraldo with a water glass and forcibly dragging her out of his apartment building for the trip to a far away hospital to seek treatment.
He claimed he wanted to represent his constituents.
He instead participated in a “parliamentary coup” of the Senate that stopped our state government from voting on serious matters, such as the much-needed budget cuts that affected all of his constituents back in Jacksons Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst and LeFrak City.
Good job representing the folks who elected you Hiram.
Monserrate, one of the Albany coup’s “four amigos” including Bronx Senators Ruben Diaz, Pedro Espada Jr. and Brooklyn Senator Carl Kruger, created a circus-like shutdown of the government that became what was the most embarrassing episode in the history of the State of New York.
Way to go Hiram!
Monserrate spent countless hours with his lawyers, fighting his personal battle. His refusal to quit when convicted of a misdemeanor count of assault wasted oodles of time of the nine-member bipartisan State Senate Committee, which reviewed his case and all the evidence.
That Committee’s report recommending that Monserrate be expelled was released on Thursday, January 14.
The State Democratic Conference met for nearly six-hours in a closed-door session on Tuesday, February 9 and then the members of the New York State Senate voted 53 to 8 to expel Monserrate from their body.
Out is out, Hiram.
After the expulsion vote, Governor David Paterson called a Special Election to take place on Tuesday, March 16.
Two days after the expulsion vote, Monserrate sued them in federal court.
More lawyers, less representation – more press conferences and more time wasted.
Someone is paying all the legal bills – we pray it is not the taxpayers whom Monserrate is “desperately” determined to represent.
We call on United States Southern District Court Judge William Pauley to stop this political nightmare, find against Monserrate and stop this circus starring Hiram center stage.
Stop this insanity and throw the bum out!
