ROCKAWAY PARK — A Brooklyn man was charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into a deli and stealing cartons of cigarettes, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Ovon Seay, 38, was charged with burglary, criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar’s tools and criminal mischief, the DA said. He was held on $7,500 bail and was scheduled to appear again in court Thursday.
At 10:30 p.m. Feb. 26, Chun Li, owner of Garden West Deli, locked the deli and left with the window intact and everything in order. An employee informed him that when he opened the store the next day at 7 a.m. the front counter was in disarray, the side window was broken and glass was shattered across the floor.
Li said he reviewed surveillance tape and watched as Seay along with another apprehended man, John Scanlon, allegedly cut two padlocks on the front gate of the store with a bolt cutter, according to the DA. Scanlon then allegedly broke the side window with his shoulder and proceeded to remove numerous cartons of cigarettes, which he placed in a box before leaving, according to the DA.
The DA did not provide further information about Scanlon.
