Historical Society holding essay contest

Bayside Historical Society (BHS) is sponsoring a children’s Art/Essay Contest for students in Districts 25 and 26 (grades 3 through 8), to be held in conjunction with its upcoming exhibit “The Women of Bayside.”

Prizes will be awarded, and winners’ works will be displayed this May at BHS headquarters, in the landmark former Officers’ Club in Fort Totten Park.

According to a spokesperson, “Contestants should create a work of art in any media that reflects a “Woman of Inspiration” who either lives or works in Bayside – or choose a historic woman from Bayside (suggestions, background information, and contest guidelines are posted on baysidehistorical.org). A one- or two-paragraph essay must accompany the artwork.”

The submission deadline is Sunday, April 18. Works may be dropped off or mailed to: Bayside Historical Society, 208 Totten Avenue/Fort Totten, Bayside, NY 11359 (include name, address, phone number, school, teacher and grade).

Submissions will be judged based on originality; form; content and relevance. One winner will be selected from each of the following categories: grades three and four; grades five and six; and grades seven and eight.

Monetary prizes will be awarded to three students, along with a copy of the book Bayside (Arcadia Publishing) and a membership to Bayside Historical Society. The works will be displayed during the exhibition.
