A Flushing man who stabbed an elderly grandmother repeatedly as he burglarized her home will be spending the next 14 years in prison, the Queens district attorney said.
Andre Mathis, 34, of 67-41 Kissena Blvd., was sentenced Thursday for attempted murder, burglary, robbery and assault charges for the incident that took place inside the Springfield Gardens home of Vivian Squires on Jan. 4, 2009, DA Richard Brown said.
Mathis admitted last month in court that he climbed up to the window and awoke Squires, 87, around 6 a.m. that morning. He then slashed her neck and hands and stabbed her in the back before stealing cash and her car, the DA said.
Squires was rushed to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where she went on to make a full recovery from her injuries, which required more than 60 stitches.
