Hundreds turned out to speak out against budget cuts and firehouse closures.
Residents, as well as I.S. 162 students, joined City Council Fire & Criminal Justice Committee Chair Elizabeth Crowley (at lectern), Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Congressmember Nydia Velazquez, Councilmembers Erik Dilan and Diana Reyna, along with Steve Cassidy of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, Eddie Boles of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association and firefighters from both sides of the Brooklyn-Queens border at Engine Company 271/Ladder 124 in protest.
The Mayor has threatened to close at least 20 – and as many as 60 – fire companies on July 1, the beginning of the new fiscal year, they claim.
