COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Bill Newton is president of the All American Car Club, which hosts shows that raise money for various charities.
Just last year, the members, who exhibit their classic cars, raised $900 for Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) Church in Ozone Park to help purchase a new chalice. In addition, the club has raised funds for St. Mary’s Hospital for Children; the American Red Cross; the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department (to go toward a new firehouse); Toys for Tots and others.
They also team up with other organizations, such as New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC). “We put our cars on display for NYFAC,” said Newton, who has a 1961 jewel blue Corvette, which he lovingly restored.
Every Thursday at 6 p.m., from now until October, the club hosts “Cruise Night” at the Waldbaum’s on Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach. “Anyone with or who appreciates classic cars can come, everyone is welcome,” he said. They will also be doing a show in July at the Ozone Howard Little League.
PERSONAL: Newton is married with two grown children. His wife, Stella, is a nurse at Queens Pediatrics in Howard Beach.
JOB: Newton works for the New York City Transit Authority.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE: For Newton, it’s just being “involved in a lot,” but he thanks his vice president, Anthony Ringston, for all his support. “He does a lot for the club,” said Newton.
FAVORITE MEMORY: “The days my kids were born,” he said.
INSPIRATION: Newton says he learned his love for cars from his father, William, and his uncle, Carl Lawler.
“My father worked for a junkyard and he was always involved in cars,” said Newton.
Additionally, Newton says he has the members of the club to thank.
“Without them it wouldn’t be anything,” he said, underscoring “their help, enthusiasm, camaraderie and diversity.”
