Man face 6 1/2 years for assaulting baby: DA

OZONE PARK — An Ozone Park man will likely spend 6 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting his infant daughter while baby-sitting her, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Juan Gomez, 24, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault and is expected to be sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison June 14, according to the DA.

The man’s 13-week-old daughter was taken to Schneider Children’s Hospital in March with bruises to her chest and eye, a fracture in her foot, a fractured ankle, 17 fractured ribs, a lacerated liver and difficulty breathing, the DA said. The baby has since recovered.

Gomez admitted he grabbed his daughter by the feet and ankles and pushed her legs back until the feet and ankles were bent back onto her chest and head-butted the baby in her head, which caused bruising because of his head piercing.

Additionally, he would throw his daughter into the air and catch her by placing his hands over her rib cage, the DA said.

The assaults occurred between December 2009 and February 2010 when he took care of his daughter while the infant’s mother worked.
