Vallone helps Astoria garden

Astoria’s community garden, Two Coves, has a new irrigation system and other improvements thanks to the help of a Queens Councilmember.

Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. joined Department of Parks and Recreation Queens Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski at the facility on May 5 to unveil the new system and other improvements to the facility.

“The new irrigation system is a great addition to this area’s longstanding oasis,” Vallone said. “Astoria is fortunate to have this group of conscientious citizens who were able to transform a dilapidated plot of land into a thriving garden.”

Vallone allocated $100,000 in capital funding for Astoria’s only community garden, which helped turn the once vacant 25,000-square-foot lot into a fully sustainable space. The funding provided an underground irrigation system throughout the property on 8th Street and Astoria Boulevard, allowing for gardeners to water and tend to their plots. Eight benches were also installed, giving the community additional space.

In addition, Vallone also secured an additional $450,000 for future improvements, which will include a gazebo for community events and performances. Two Coves Community Garden has more than 100 individual plots and one 1,300-square-foot community lot, tended to by over 200 members.
