Mets legend Darryl Strawberry plans to open a new restaurant along 235th Street in Douglaston and is currently seeking a manager, according to an ad on Craigslist.
Strawberry’s Sports Grill will be built at 42-15 235th St. in Douglaston, the former site of a steakhouse near the Long Island Rail Road station, said Susan Seinfeld, district manager of Community Board 11. The site has applied for a liquor license, but no date has been announced for the restaurant’s opening, she said.
Strawberry, who lives in Missouri, joined the Mets in 1983 and helped lead them to a World Series championship in 1986 and the New York Yankees to three World Series wins in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
The home run king also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants during the course of his 16-year career.
He retired in 1999.
Craigslist currently has a job posting for a general manager position at the restaurant whose duties will include floor management, hiring and firing, training, scheduling, ordering and inventory. The job pays $50,000 to $60,000 per year.
The restaurant will feature “high quality food” and “excellent customer service,” according to the posting.
The grill is seeking managers who have three years minimum restaurant experience as well as a background in the administrative aspects of operating an eatery.
