Mom abandons baby boy at subway station: DA

JAMAICA — A 20-year-old woman was arrested over the weekend on charges of abandoning her baby boy at a subway station just days after she gave birth to him, the Queens district attorney’s office said.

Antonia Lopez, of 101st Avenue, was charged Saturday with abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Queens DA Richard Brown. On Friday night, a woman at the F train station at Sutphin Boulevard and Hillside Avenue found a baby boy wrapped in a blanket on the floor of the station, the criminal complaint said.

The clothes on the boy were identified as being from Coney Island Hospital, according to the complaint.

Lopez gave birth to the boy June 9 and left the hospital later that day, the complaint said. She allegedly told investigators she abandoned the baby because she did not have the money to be a mother, according to the criminal complaint.

A representative for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said he would not comment on the incident, which is still under investigation by the police.
