Two juveniles have been arrested amid a string of burglaries in Little Neck that have taken place during the past two months, Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Whitestone) said Tuesday.
Capt. Ronald Leyson told members of the 111th Precinct Community Council at its annual awards ceremony earlier this month that there had been a rash of burglaries at homes in the 109th and 111th precincts — especially in Little Neck.
The precinct had been eyeing a suspect in the incidents, but no arrests had been made at that time, the captain said.
But Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Whitestone) said two youths, ages 16 and 17, had been arrested Friday on a separate matter, but the precinct believed they may have been involved in the break-ins. Items stolen during the incidents include X Boxes and Play Stations.
Burglars had broken into all of the homes through the back door, he said.
Halloran did not have the names of the suspects.
The 111th Precinct could not be reached for comment.
Susan Seinfeld, district manager of Community Board 11, said there had recently been as many as eight break-ins during daylight hours throughout the community.
“Burglaries come in waves,” she said. “A group hits one spot and then moves on.”
None of the residents were home when the break-ins took place, she said.
One Little Neck resident, Jim Parisano, said he and his neighbors had been extremely concerned about the burglaries and that he wanted police to place an extra patrol car in the neighborhood.
“I have friends and neighbors up the block whose homes have been burglarized and the house across the street from me has been burglarized,” he said. “But we’ve heard almost nothing about it and none of our neighbors see patrol cars. There needs to be more of a police presence here. This is a crime spree.”
Most of the burglaries took place near 249th Street in Little Neck, he said.
The number of burglaries in the precinct are 10 percent higher than they were last year at this time, according to 111th Precinct statistics.
But the number of grand larceny and grand larceny incidents are lower this year so far than last year during the same period.
