New editor of
El Correo

Hello! My name is Aisha Al-Muslim and I am the new editor of El Correo de Queens. I cannot wait to report stories that interest the Latino community in Queens.

First, I want to tell you about how I got to where I am today. I came to the United States from Panama in December 1996. When I was little I taught myself how to read and write English.

With the help of scholarships from journalism and Latino groups, I was able to attend Lehman College in the Bronx, where I studied multilingual journalism with a concentration in Spanish.

I also attended the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, where I got my master’s degree in journalism with a concentration in urban studies. I was the first in my family to graduate with a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

I have experience with all aspects of newsgathering and storytelling, from how to write for a newspaper, report a video story for a television newscast, or even a web site. I’ve also written for other bilingual newspapers and magazines, and I have experience working at television stations in English and Spanish.

Journalists can help to correct the stereotypes that exist in the American press about Latinos and minorities. And that is precisely what I plan to do. I cannot wait to tell your stories.
