Queens Village man gets 80 to life for robbery, violent police chase

By Howard Koplowitz

A Queens Village man was sentenced to 80 years to life in prison last week for shooting at Nassau County police officers while he and three others led the officers on a high-speed chase through Nassau and Queens after they committed a home invasion robbery in Elmont, L.I., in 2009, the Nassau district attorney’s office said.

Isaac Holland, 26, of 113-02 207th St. in Queens Village, and three others, who were all armed, broke into a home on Dorothea Lane in Elmont April 4, 2009, where they bound a man and his parents with duct tape and fled the scene in a van after stealing cell phones and cash, the DA said.

One of the victims was able to break free and call 911, Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice said.

Two officers who responded to the home chased Holland and the other burglars into Queens when the Queens Village man fired his .44 caliber handgun through the back window of the van, hitting the hood of the police car and narrowly missing the officers, Rice said.

The two officers returned fire and the van came to a stop, the DA said. The men tried to flee on foot, but were caught, she said.

“This violent and brazen attack on a sleeping family and two Nassau County police officers left a wake of destruction across two counties,” Rice said in a statement last Thursday. “Today’s sentence sends the message that those who terrorize our homes and attack our police officers will spend the rest of their lives in a prison cell.”

Holland was convicted May 17 of attempted murder, robbery, burglary and criminal possession of a weapon, Rice said.

He was sentenced last Thursday to 80 years to life in prison on those charges and his three accomplices earlier pleaded guilty, Rice said.

St. Albans resident Jonathan Spencer, 24, of 191-09 113th St., pleaded guilty to robbery in the case, the DA said.

Also pleading guilty, both to burglary charges, were 33-year-old Matthew Romain of 116-09 115th St. and 51-year-old Gary Spencer of 116-41 166th St, Rice said. Both men lived in Jamaica.
