Gas truck kills boy days before his 13th birhtday

MASPETH — A boy who would have turned 13 Thursday was killed Monday after being struck by an 18-wheel gas truck at the intersection of Fresh Pond Road and Eliot Avenue, police sources said.

The boy, Maspeth resident Frederich Endre, was pronounced dead on arrival after being transported to Wyckoff Medical Center, police said.

Police responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 p.m., police said.

According to the New York Post, Frederich was trying to cross a busy street on his bicycle. The driver of the truck did not see Frederich coming and Frederich was crushed underneath the back wheels of the truck, the Post said.

Ron Digi, a witness who spoke to the Post and said he tried to help Frederich, said, “He wasn’t moving. He wasn’t speaking. He looked gone the moment I got over there.”

Frederich lived just around the corner on 61st Street, police said.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, whose name had not been released Tuesday night, did not leave the scene. He was issued three summonses, two for equipment violations and one for operating his truck off-route.

A memorial was set up at the intersection of Eliot Avenue and Fresh Pond Road by Frederich’s classmates. Friends and family left candles, flowers, balloons and toys at the memorial.

“You[’re] in our hearts always and forever,” one message read. “Fly with angels. Love, the kids on the block.”
