Keeping her father’s legacy alive

After losing her father to lung cancer last year, Flushing resident Carrie Wesolowski is trying to make a difference by participating in marathons.

Through the non-profit organization Lung Cancer Alliance, Wesolowski has become the New York City team captain for its Team Lung Love, where participants raise funds and awareness through half-marathons, marathons, and 8Ks.

“My father’s legacy is my determination to keep speaking and keep running,” Wesolowski said. “The first Team Lung Love was such a wonderful journey that has taken me to new places, speaking to local political and civic groups, and meeting so many inspiring and incredible people of all ages from different parts of the country.”

Wesolowski first took part in a Team Lung Love event when she participated in a half-marathon in Providence, RI. During the next part of her journey, Wesolowski will run in the Philadelphia Marathon.

She is also now looking for recruits to join in the New York City team’s efforts. According to Team Lung Love’s web site, members get expert training and coaching as well as tips and assistance for fundraising, among other things.

“I look forward to sharing my experiences and training tips,” she said.

Wesolowski will be holding three upcoming information sessions in Queens. They are:

? Bay Terrace Library, located at 18-36 Bell Boulevard, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 5.

? The Poppenhusen Institute, located at 114-04 14th Road in College Point, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 8.

? The Broadway Library, located at 40-20 Broadway, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 21.

Anyone wishing to R.S.V.P. for an information session can email teamlunglove2@gmail.com.

“I feel so fortunate to have found Lung Cancer Alliance, the only non-profit securing federal funding for lung cancer, and bringing awareness to this disease through Team Lung Love,” Wesolowski said.
