While a perennial issue that needs to be addressed, parking is hardly the new "nightmare" portrayed in your latest article on the 78th Street Play Street ("’Play Street’ creates parking nightmare," July 27). The Play Street is important for several reasons. First and foremost, the Play Street expands the space available to those enjoying Travers Park. Increasing and improving space is critical to the countless children who have absolutely nowhere else to exercise outside their cramped apartments. My office has received numerous messages from a variety of other residents who enjoy the expanded space as well.
I hail the advent of the Muni Meters and am working to free up more parking spaces. I have already submitted legislation to decrease the required distance from a fire hydrant from 15 feet to 10 feet. I am now studying the idea of parking permits for residents.
Jackson Heights is and should remain a beautiful, dynamic, welcoming place with public spaces where neighbors can congregate and enjoy their surroundings and each other’s company.
