Charity auto show at Coliseum

Attention auto aficionados – mark your calendars for Saturday, October 2.

That day, the New York Islanders Group Team, in conjunction with the All American Car Club, will present the 1st Annual NYI Classic Car Show at the Nassau Coliseum.

If you have a classic car, a tricked-out ride, or are pretty proud of your wheels, simply call, email, or show up to register. Everyone who does will receive a complimentary ticket to the Islanders pre-season game against the New Jersey Devils at 7 p.m.

Trophies will be awarded by peers’ choice.

But the best part is that a portion of the day’s proceeds will go to Life’s WORC, whose mission is to “provide services that facilitate an independent and productive life experience for individuals with developmental disabilities including mental retardation and autism.”

With 36 homes now in Nassau, Queens and Suffolk Counties, Life’s WORC serves 1,200 individuals and their families each year through home and day programs, and a variety of other services.

It was founded in 1977 by Queens Courier publisher Victoria Schneps-Yunis, and has since grown.

But, with the recent downturn in the economy, funding – and fundraising – has been a challenge, according to Matthew Zebatto, assistant executive director for development and public affairs at Life’s WORC.

“It’s an ongoing challenge because of the current economy,” he said. “As such, we have to increase awareness and fundraising efforts, so when someone like Anthony Ringston [vice president of the All American Car Club] comes around, we’re very grateful.”

“The fundraising will go toward continuing our quality care and high standards, especially in our autism program,” continued Zebatto.

“The All American Car Club gives back to various charities throughout the year, including St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, the American Red Cross, Toys for Tots and others,” said Ringston. “So we are happy that we are able to help another good cause – Life’s WORC – and continue our efforts in the community.”

If you have a car you’d like to show, you can register at the gate beginning at 8 a.m. To learn more, visit newyorkislanders.com/carshow or call 800-882-ISLES, ext. 3.
