Command change in 106th Precinct

There’s a new face at the 106th Precinct.

Captain Thomas J. Shalley joins the command as Executive Officer (XO), replacing Captain Craig Adelman, who is now with the 113th Precinct.

Shalley, 46, with over 18 years on the Force, had been assigned to Police Service Area (PSA) 4 on the Lower East Side before joining the men and women of the 106.

He explained that, as XO, he “performs the duties of the Commanding Officer [Deputy Inspector Joseph G. Courtesis] when he is not available and makes sure the command runs smoothly.”

The Fresh Meadows father of two – Kevin, 23 and Brian, 16 – told The Courier, “I have to be prepared for CompStat, graffiti stat, and others. I am in charge of specialized units and I help to make sure the officers do their job and maintain a good relationship with the community.”

One of his first challenges, he said, is to “concentrate on developing a strategy to deal with” an increase in robberies and grand larceny autos within the command.

Over the years, said Shalley, who holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. John’s University, the job has changed.

“Crime has been reduced, but now we have to deal with terrorism,” he said.

Still, the best part of his day is “being able to help the community, to assist people who were victimized and arrest those who committed crimes.”

He continued, “I’m happy to be here in Queens South at the 106th Precinct. Chief James Secreto [Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Queens South] is a true gentleman.”
