Well, here it is October 2010 and there is still no contract between the United Federation of Teachers and the city Department of Education. Why? The teachers in this city are hardworking and dedicated to helping their students achieve success in the classroom. The conditions under which teachers are working are far from ideal in some instances.
Lack of materials, overcrowded classrooms, disciplinary problems, and a lack of support from school administrators are some of the critical issues that need to be addressed with the DOE. The teachers deserve a fair and just contract that will recognize how hard they work by paying them a decent, livable wage.
Another important aspect of education is that teachers need to always be treated with respect and professionalism. That seems to be lacking. Settle the contract and pay us a fair salary! We deserve better treatment by the DOE and the city schools chancellor. Parents recognize the hard work we do, so why can’t the DOE?
