Eddie Walter’s memory, spirit and commitment lived on this past weekend.

One hundred thirty cars and motorcycles set out from Forest Park on Sunday, November 14 for the East Coast Car Association (ECCA)’s 12th annual Toy Run.

ECCA was founded in 1999 as a means for founder Walter to give back to St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital after his own family received help.

Since then, the club – and the Toy Run – has grown.

“This is the best one we’ve ever had,” said ECCA vice president Lou Buglione. “We had a great turnout, the weather was excellent, and the police department, especially Highway 3, was excellent.”

With classics, new models, old police cruisers and even a Staten Island fire truck leading the way, the procession of vehicles headed toward St. Mary’s, where, Buglione said, one room is being donated by the ECCA in Walter’s memory. They have pledged $25,000 over three years, he said.

“It’s great to be a part of something bigger than yourself,” said Eddie Sferrazza of Whitestone, who had his 1972 Hurst Olds “Tribute,” lovingly restored, on display.

To date, the ECCA has raised over $60,000 for St. Mary’s.

“Everyone understands what the cause is and we have a very loyal following,” said Buglione. “Our main goal is to keep Eddie Walter’s dream alive. Once you see the kids, all the hard work is worth it.”
