“As reported, I originally signed my name onto a City Council resolution calling on state education commissioner David Steiner to deny Cathie Black the waiver she needs to become chancellor of our city’s schools. I have since asked that my name be removed from that resolution. I realized this was a rush to judgment.
“I would like to ask my colleagues on the City Council to give Black a chance. I want to hear more from the mayor on her qualifications to be chancellor and the process used in her selection. And I want to hear more from Black on her plan to improve our city’s public schools.
“We owe Black a fair hearing. I call on the Education Committee to call Black to testify before the Council so we can make an informed decision.”
