United Adult Ministries, the parent company of Flushing House, was planning to honor two outstanding people with The Rose Kryzak Senior Leadership Award during its annual gala fund-raising dinner Thursday at the Westbury Manor in Westbury, L.I..
This year’s honorees are Maria Cuadrado, Lucy Garcia and Sue Bouffier.
Cuadrado, president of the Queens Interagency Council on Aging, has made her group the leading advocacy/lobbying group in the borough, bringing issues of concern to seniors to government. She served as co-director with Garcia of the Elmhurst/Jackson Heights Senior Center for a year. She lives in Elmhurst.
Garcia became associate director of the center in 1990 and its director in 2006. The Elmhurst center serves more than 10,000 registered members who pay a one-time contribution of $5. It feeds breakfast and lunch to 500 seniors each day. She also lives in Elmhurst.
Bouffier has been program manager of the Franklin Square Senior Community Service Center on Long Island since 1999. She was responsible for fostering many new initiatives at the center.
Rose Kryzak was a public advocate who fought for the rights of seniors. A resident of Flushing House for her last 13 years, she died June 24, 1999, at age 99. At each gala, Kryzak’s grandchildren and family attend to honor the winners for their good works on behalf of older adults.
Flushing House, at 38-20 Bowne St. in Flushing, is a nonprofit retirement residence in Flushing and was one of the first to offer older adults independent living with supportive services on-premises.
