Now that the waiver has been given and Cathie Black is the new Schools Chancellor, my sincerest wishes for her success.
Contrary to the Mayor’s beliefs, the objections to Black were not based on politics, as evidenced by the diversity of the opposition, and the concerns expressed by State Education Commissioner Steiner and his Advisory Panel.
Once she became Chancellor, Black would be immune from any public discontent since under the current school governance law, there is no mechanism for a Chancellor’s competence to be evaluated by the public. As Chancellor, she will answer to only one person, our Mayor, and he has shown himself to be less than amenable to those who disagree with him.
Every effort will be made to help Black succeed in establishing an education system that truly educates our children.
