‘What Women Auto Know’ workshops

With winter right around the corner, knowing how to maintain your car is essential for both genders.

The monthly workshop “What Women Auto Know” at Great Bear Auto Repair and Auto Body Shop in Flushing teaches unforgettable information, such as how to check your motor oil, power steering fluids, transmission oil, tire pressure and more.

Audra Fordin, who is the fourth generation owner of the auto shop, teaches the workshop on the third Saturday of every month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Reservations are required.

“I get inspired by watching the women get it, all of a sudden it’s not scary anymore,” said Fordin. “I enjoy hosting this because it brings awareness, empowerment and education to our community.”

For her work, Fordin received a Citation of Honor from Councilmember Julissa Ferreras on Saturday, November 20.

“Audra is an amazing woman,” Ferreras said. “She is one of the six women nationwide involved in this program and it has been an honor to work with her.”

The classes are free, but with the help of donations, Fordin has been able to fix the cars of women in need.

“There is a stereotype in the automotive industry that is not female friendly, and I am definitely not a man working on cars,” Fordin said. “There is no doubt that women can do this, and I want to push away that stereotype.”

During her workshops, Fordin answers questions and engages all the women in her lesson.

“I strongly recommend this great course to all women,” said Joan DeCamp, who lives in Richmond Hill. “I feel much more confident now about cars.”
