Arrest in fatal hit-and-run on LIE

Police in the 112th and 105th Precincts teamed up to locate and arrest a motorist they say fatally hit a motorcyclist – then fled the scene.
On Monday January 10, cops responded to an accident on the Long Island Expressway in the vicinity of Junction Boulevard. Responding officers found Dwan Gonzalez, 44, unconscious and unresponsive at the scene. EMS also responded and pronounced the man dead.
Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle, a 2002 Harley Davidson, was traveling eastbound on the Horace Harding Expressway and was struck from behind by a white Mercedes Benz that fled the scene. The Mercedes was found a short time later by officers within the confines of the 105th Precinct and the driver, identified in published reports as 26-year-old Shamel Campbell, was taken into custody. The accident investigation is ongoing, but reports claim that Campbell was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated unlicensed operation [of a motor vehicle].
