The Police Athletic League (PAL) recently announced the Queens winners of its Annual Brotherhood/Sisterhood Art Contest. Over 500 PAL youngsters, ages five to 14, received recognition for their artwork of this year’s theme, “Greek and Roman Mythology.”
The colorful creations included a variety of art mediums such as posters, murals, three-dimensional crafts and quilts. The winning students, from PAL’s 16 full-time centers throughout the five boroughs, received awards for their outstanding pieces.
Young people from PAL’s Redfern Cornerstone Center in Arverne-Far Rockaway and P.S. 214 in Flushing were among the honored artists.
Rebekkah Boatwright, Alek Boatwright, Makayla Potter and Derrick Crawford from PAL’s Redfern Cornerstone Center received First Place in the Murals category. Angelina Huang, Bailey Chan, Iris Lin and Stephanie Chen, fifth graders from P.S. 214, placed Third in Crafts, while fourth graders Ethan Reres, Jamena Ureña, Danielle Gonzalez and Steve Lin also from P.S. 214 took Honorable Mention in the category.
PAL’s Annual Brotherhood/Sisterhood Art Contest is one of the PAL KIDS Events that offer a series of contests, showcases, performances and festivals for children in PAL’s After School Program. Events are designed to stimulate learning, cooperation, camaraderie, self-expression and sportsmanship, while helping children to develop their talents and artistic abilities.
New York City’s Police Athletic League is the first, largest and finest civilian-run PAL in the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served the city’s young people for 97 years.
