Day care provider gets 3 yrs in baby drowning

KEW GARDENS — A child daycare provider from Ozone Park was sentenced to up to three years in prison Monday for the June 2009 death of an 11-month old infant who drowned in a bucket of water while in her care, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Krystal Khan, 30, of 101-27 108th St. in Ozone Park, was asleep on the sofa in another room after having taken Nyquil around 6 a.m. June 15, 2009, when 11-month-old James Farrior was discovered by Khan’s 4-year-old child in the kitchen with his upper body submerged in a bucket, which contained about 6 inches of water, Brown said.

“The defendant must now live the rest of her life knowing that by failing to act responsibly as a care giver her actions resulted in the death of a child and robbed that child’s parents of seeing their baby grow up,” Brown said. “This is a sad case for all involved and will hopefully remind all care givers that small children are fragile and must be monitored at all times.”

Khan was convicted last month of reckless assault of a child by a daycare provider and endangering the welfare of a child before Queens Supreme Court Judge Richard Buchter, who sentenced her to one to three years in prison Monday, the DA said.
