Francis Lewis advances to science finals

The science department at Francis Lewis High School is proud of the 19 students who are representing their school in the 2011 NYC Science and Engineering Fair.

The finals round was held on Tuesday, March 29, at the American Museum of Natural History. Between 15 and 20 scoring students will be selected to represent the city at the International Science and Engineering Fair Finals in Los Angeles, CA to compete for over $4,000,000 in scholarships and awards.

Out of the 19 students, three sophomores advanced to the finals round of the competition. Jing Huang, Xin “Cindy” Lin and Emily Yang advanced with their research project "The Effects of Salicylic Acid on the Growth of Nemophilia menziesii."

“We screamed for 20 minutes,” said Yang.

“[We are] extremely proud of the students this year because this is the first year where the younger kids are involved and they really did well in the final competitions,” said Dr. David Marmor, head of the science department at Francis Lewis. “To get some of the younger kids involved at this high level is truly rewarding.”

When asked what inspired them to complete this project, Jing said, “[In] our freshman year, Dr. Blackwell pushes us to read different scientific articles from Science Direct.”

Francis Lewis has the most students competing in the competition outside of the specialized science schools such as Stuyvesant and Brooklyn Technical High School, according to 2011 NYC Science and Engineering Fair statistics.
