Free prescription card for New Yorkers

New Yorkers looking to saving money on their prescriptions can now get the free discount card NYCRx, which could result in up to 65 percent in savings.

As a non-profit organization, NYCRx partners with New York City health centers and hospitals “to make safe and effective medications available at the lowest possible cost to all New Yorkers.”

“There are an estimated one million uninsured New Yorkers,” said NYCRx head Sarah Sheffield. “And beyond the one million uninsured, there are an estimated 300,000 more New Yorkers with health insurance but no prescription coverage.”

The free discount cards can are available in the five boroughs. They can be picked up at participating local pharmacies and at some restaurants. Those interested in the card do not have to meet any residency or income requirements.

Once the person has the card, they can “get a prescription from your doctor at a participating health center or hospital clinic [and] fill it at the nearby participating pharmacy.”

The card can be used for generic or brand name prescriptions. Estimated savings are between 20 and 65 percent.
